Who knew a Berlin housing estate could be so fascinating? Welcome to the Thermometersiedlung. This isn’t just any apartment complex. It’s a microcosm of Berlin’s history and social fabric. Built between 1968 and 1974 it represents a typical example of West Berlin’s suburban development during the 1970s.

Imagine a sprawling estate of around 60 buildings. Some are high-rises reaching up to 22 stories. In 2018 nearly 4644 people called this place home. The foreign resident percentage was significantly higher than the Berlin average. The percentage of Germans with a migration background was also higher than the city-wide average.

This wasn’t just about bricks and mortar. The Thermometersiedlung tells a story of social dynamics. It has a different population structure and social situation compared to other areas in Steglitz-Zehlendorf. The neighbourhood has weaker social structures and considerably lower incomes. In fact a 2017 social city development monitoring report flagged it as an area needing special attention.

But why the name Thermometersiedlung? Three of its four streets are named after famous physicists. Anders Celsius Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit and René-Antoine Ferchault de Réaumur. These are the men who gave their names to the temperature scales we still use today. Even the fourth street Mercatorweg honors a cartographer. A subtle but brilliant tribute to scientific achievements.

The Thermometersiedlung has faced challenges. For a time it was considered a social hotspot with issues related to violence and drugs. However. significant effort has been put into improving the area. Building facades have been renovated since the early 1990s. Much money was invested in playgrounds and green spaces. The renaturation of the Stangenpfuhl and the Stangenpfuhlgraben are prime examples. Police consultations for residents were also established.

Today. the Thermometersiedlung is changing. It’s a vibrant neighbourhood with a strong community spirit. There’s a focus on community building and social integration. A local café acts as a community hub offering activities for all ages. The neighbourhood is actively working to improve and overcome past issues.

And there’s more to the story. Famous German rappers Fler Jalil and Samra grew up here. Their music often reflects life in the Thermometersiedlung. Many of their music videos were even filmed here. The Thermometersiedlung isn’t just a housing estate it’s a living breathing part of Berlin’s cultural landscape. Its story is one of transformation resilience and community spirit. It’s a story worth exploring. A story waiting to be discovered.
