“Can this towering structure really trace its roots back to a simple chapel?” a curious passerby might have asked, gazing up at the Église Saint-Étienne. This architectural marvel, an enduring symbol of faith in the heart of Nice, has witnessed centuries of history unfold beneath its magnificent arches. The story of Église Saint-Étienne is not one straight path but a tale of resilience, marked by pauses and ambitious expansions. Imagine, if you will, the year 1902. A new church for the burgeoning neighborhood was desperately needed, replacing the modest chapel that once stood at Place Galvano. Thanks to the generosity of Canon Maubert, who not only secured the land but also poured his own resources into the project, the dream started to take shape. Architects Febvres and Deporta meticulously drafted the plans, envisioning a grand edifice. However, destiny, it seemed, had other ideas. The unstable, marshy ground, riddled with cress beds, proved a formidable foe. Construction costs skyrocketed as the foundation demanded unforeseen reinforcements. The grand vision had to be scaled back, making way for a more modest structure, which was completed in 1908. This was just the beginning of Église Saint-Étienne’s journey. After Canon Maubert’s passing in 1923, his successor, Canon Ciamin, picked up the mantle, determined to see the church reach its full potential. The late 1920s saw the addition of two graceful side aisles, expanding the church’s embrace. A few years later, the central nave was crowned with its magnificent vault, a testament to soaring aspirations. Finally, the iconic bell tower, with its distinctive red and yellow tiled roof, rose to grace the Nice skyline. World War II cast its long shadow, bringing the ambitious project to a standstill. It was not until 1948, with Canon Ciamin’s health failing, that Father Dominique Cauvin stepped in, bringing a renewed energy. Under his watchful eye and the guidance of architect Albert Lentulo, the final touches were completed. The apse, transept, and sacristy emerged, rounding out the architectural masterpiece we see today. The vibrant fresco depicting the martyrdom of Saint Stephen, completed in 1958, serves as a poignant reminder of the church’s namesake. In May 2013, after a meticulous restoration, Église Saint-Étienne was finally consecrated, standing as a beacon of faith, resilience, and architectural grandeur. Its story, woven into the fabric of Nice, continues to inspire awe and wonder in all who cross its threshold.
