Was it madness or a glimpse into another world? That’s the question that lingers in the air here at Mombello. Mombello might seem unassuming now, but this was once the largest psychiatric hospital in Italy. It all began much earlier, though. This site housed the grand Villa Pusterla-Crivelli. This villa saw its share of powerful figures, from Ferdinand IV to Napoleon Bonaparte himself. Imagine, Napoleon residing here, right on the brink of his Italian campaigns. His sister, Pauline, even married General Leclerc here on a hot June day in 1797. But like all fleeting moments in history, the grandeur faded. By 1879, the villa had transformed into the Ospedale Psichiatrico Giuseppe Antonini – the Mombello Psychiatric Hospital. Over three thousand souls resided within these walls at its peak. A rather grim local saying emerged: “Te se de Mumbell!” Meaning, “You are from Mombello,” implying a person wasn’t quite right in the head. From experimental epilepsy studies to early forms of electroshock therapy, Mombello witnessed both the hope and despair of medical breakthroughs. Sadly, Mombello closed its doors in 1999, a consequence of Italy’s changing approach to mental health care. Today, the remnants of Mombello stand as a solemn reminder of a tumultuous past, a place where history and the human psyche intertwined in a haunting embrace.
