Gazing upon Sankt Josefskirche, can you hear the echoes of its past? This beautiful church, nestled in Frankfurt-Eschersheim, has witnessed a century of history. It stands as a testament to the enduring faith of the community. Sankt Josefskirche isn’t just a building. It’s a living story.

Sankt Josefskirche first opened its doors in 1914. It became a beacon of hope for the Catholic community in Eschersheim. This was one of three Catholic churches in Frankfurt dedicated to Saint Joseph. The church’s journey began much earlier, in 1901, when Kurat Freidhof was assigned to care for the Catholics in Eschersheim. The first Catholic service since the Reformation was held in 1904. This was a significant moment, marking the return of Catholic worship after centuries.

The architect Hermann Mahr designed the neo-Romanesque structure. The cornerstone was laid in March 1910, after the groundbreaking ceremony in December. The following year, the roof was completed. In 1912, five bells, weighing a total of 5597 kg, were consecrated, filling the air with their resonant chimes. The parish of Sankt Josefskirche was officially established in December 1912. The church was consecrated on May 10, 1914, with dignitaries like Mayor Georg Voigt present. Rhaban Fröhlich became the first priest. Today, a street in Eschersheim bears his name.

In 1930, Sankt Josefskirche, along with other northern Frankfurt parishes, became part of the Diocese of Limburg. The first organ, built by Späth, was installed in 1932. During World War II, the church suffered minor damage and lost its windows. One of the bells, requisitioned for the war effort, was returned in 1947/1948. The windows were gradually replaced, with the final ones installed in 1978. A new set of five bells by F.W. Schilling was installed in 1958. By the late 1950s, most war damage was repaired, and a community center and kindergarten opened. Renovations continued throughout the 20th century, including exterior work in 1965-1966 and 1988-1991. Interior renovations in the late 1970s, following the Second Vatican Council, saw the removal of the pulpit and high altar.

In the 21st century, Sankt Josefskirche joined the Pastoral Area Frankfurt-Nordost in 2012. This brought together several parishes. A modern Stations of the Cross was installed in 2013, adding a contemporary touch to the historic building. The church celebrated its centennial in 2014, a testament to its enduring presence in the community. Later, it became part of the new St. Franziskus parish. Sankt Josefskirche stands near the Weißer Stein U-Bahn station. This makes it easily accessible. Sankt Josefskirche continues to serve its community. It offers a place of worship, solace, and connection to a rich history.
