Have you ever heard the story of a town that was once owned by a powerful family and then bestowed upon a famous emperor? This is the story of Mering, and it all began in 1021, when the town was a family possession of the Swabian Guelph.

But the story doesn’t stop there.

Imagine the excitement of a young emperor who gets to inherit a new castle! Just imagine Mering’s castle, so grand and imposing, standing proudly on the banks of the Paar River. It is a symbol of the town’s rich history and the shifting power dynamics of bygone days.

Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa, whose name echoes through the annals of time, took possession of the Guelph house estates in Swabia in 1167. His reign, marked by power and ambition, saw the town of Mering become a part of the Hohenstaufen family’s vast holdings while the Guelph family sadly lost their hold on it. The town would pass through many more hands over the centuries.

The main square of Mering, a place where locals and visitors alike gather to enjoy fresh produce at the market or simply sit and relax, is a hub of activity. But it is also a place where history echoes. Ancient buildings surround the centre square, their walls whispering tales of times gone by.

Walk away from the square and find yourself by the old mill and the privately owned castle, where the story of Mering continues to be written.

Mering is a small town with a big story. A story of power and family, of ownership and inheritance. A story that echoes through the centuries, reminding us of the enduring power of history.
