Izanagi Jinja is no ordinary place of worship. It is a portal to Japan’s creation myths. The shrine is dedicated to Izanagi-no-Mikoto. Izanagi is a central figure in Shinto belief. He is credited with creating the Japanese islands.
The history of Izanagi Jinja is linked to the延喜式, or Engishiki. This ancient text lists important Shinto shrines. Izanagi Jinja proudly appears within its pages. This shows the shrine’s historical significance. There are actually two Izanagi Jinja shrines listed in the Engishiki. This one and another in Sofukuji.
Legend says that the deity Toyouke Okami journeyed from丹波国 to Ise. This happened during the reign of Emperor Yuryaku. Empress Saio, inspired by a divine message, directed the 大后命 to enshrine five pillars. The search led them to this very spot in Yamada. And so Izanagi Jinja was founded.
The name Yamada itself may come from Ise Yamada. This shows a deep connection to Ise Grand Shrine. Izanagi Jinja is also known as Izanagi Isanami Jinja.
Izanagi Jinja gained recognition in 859. It was during the Jogan era. Records show it was awarded the rank of Junior Fifth Rank. This elevated its status among regional shrines.
Local people affectionately call Izanagi Jinja “the village shrine”. It watches over Yamada. This includes the areas of Senri and Senri Newtown. It is a guardian of the land and its people.
The main deity worshipped here is Izanagi-no-Mikoto. He embodies creation. Other deities include Hachiman Daishin and Susano-o no Mikoto. Once it was called the “village shrine”. It may have originally enshrined the god of Spring.
