“Can you imagine a time when this bustling city was a deserted island?” I ask, gesturing towards the vast expanse of Cù Lao Phố. It’s hard to picture it now, with the sounds of life swirling around us, but this island holds a fascinating history. Cù Lao Phố, meaning “Foreigner’s Island”, sits cradled by the two branches of the Đồng Nai River, a little piece of land shaped almost like a pendant. Don’t let its modest size fool you though. Cù Lao Phố was a crucial trading post, connecting domestic and international merchants as early as the late 17th century. It became one of the first seaports in the Southern region, its strategic location attracting merchants from all corners of the world. Imagine ships laden with exotic goods, sailors bargaining in a multitude of languages, and the air thick with the scent of spices and the promise of prosperity. It was a time when fortunes were made and lost, a true melting pot of cultures. Cù Lao Phố thrived for many years, fueled by the entrepreneurial spirit of the Chinese community led by Trần Thượng Xuyên. He arrived here in 1679, transforming this wilderness into a vibrant hub. It was a place where farmers cultivated rice and pepper, artisans crafted beautiful goods, and traders exchanged silk, porcelain, and medicine from China. Cù Lao Phố hummed with life. But like all stories, this one too had its share of challenges. Cù Lao Phố faced internal unrest and external threats. In 1747, a revolt led by Lý Văn Quang caused significant damage. Later, in 1776, the Tây Sơn army attacked the island, forcing many Chinese merchants to flee, leaving Cù Lao Phố a shadow of its former self. Today, Cù Lao Phố remains a poignant reminder of a bygone era. Although its role as a major trading center has faded, its historical and cultural significance endures. As you stroll through its streets, imagine the echoes of its past, a story of ambition, prosperity, and resilience etched into the very soul of this island.
