Remember Smyrna? Nea Smyrni is its legacy. This municipality in South Athens carries a poignant history. It is a testament to resilience. Nea Smyrni stands as a vibrant community. It is full of stories waiting to be discovered.

Nea Smyrni. The name itself whispers tales of a city lost and found. It means “New Smyrna” in Greek. It was named to honor the city of Smyrna, now Izmir in Turkey. Smyrna’s Greek population suffered greatly during the 1922 catastrophe of Asia Minor. The Burning of Smyrna led to immense suffering. Many Christians were massacred. Refugees sought safety in Greece.

The Greek government decided to build a settlement for these refugees. That settlement is Nea Smyrni. Construction began in 1926. In 1928, only 210 people lived here. By 1933, Nea Smyrni had grown into a town of 6500. By 1940, its population reached 15000. Finally, in 1944, Nea Smyrni officially became a municipality.

The early days were challenging. The refugees rebuilt their lives from scratch. They brought their culture and traditions with them. They infused Nea Smyrni with the spirit of their lost home. Even today, Nea Smyrni honors its roots. Over 130 streets bear the names of regions and figures from Asia Minor.

Nea Smyrni is more than just a place. It embodies the enduring spirit of its people. The main center is known for Nea Smyrni Square. It is one of the largest squares in the country. This vibrant hub is full of shops, cafes, bars and restaurants.

Take a stroll through Alsos Neas Smyrnis. This “small wood” is a green oasis. It spans fifty acres. This park offers a peaceful escape from the urban hustle.

Nea Smyrni has a rich sporting history. Panionios G.S.S. is a multi-sport club founded in Smyrna in 1890. AONS Milon is another notable club founded in 1928.

Nea Smyrni is densely populated. It is the second-most densely populated municipality in Greece. Yet, it maintains a sense of community and charm. Its streets are alive with activity. Its squares buzz with conversation.

The climate here is hot and semi-arid. Summers are hot. The winters are mild. The Athens Riviera is nearby.
