Eugène ALENTCHENKO was born on December 15 1923. He was a Nice native. His parents were Russian immigrants. He worked as a driver at the Compagnie des Eaux. His alias was Joffre.

In July 1943 Eugène ALENTCHENKO joined the Resistance. He became part of the 36th FTPF company of Provence. He served with the Geoffroy group as a corporal. His duties included distributing tracts. He also transported arms and gathered intelligence.

On the day of the Nice uprising Eugène ALENTCHENKO fought valiantly. He initially battled at the Passage à Niveau. Later he moved to Quai Saint-Jean Baptiste. After attacking a blockhouse on Boulevard Carabacel he took a strategic position. He went to the roof of 2 Rue Defly. From there he targeted a German machine gun. It was positioned on the Garibaldi bridge. Eugène silenced the gun killing two soldiers. Sadly he was spotted and fatally wounded in the head around 4 PM.
