Did you know that St Nicholas Russian Orthodox Cathedral was the first purpose-built Russian Orthodox church in Australia? It is a beautiful and historically significant landmark right here in Brisbane. Let’s explore the story behind this unique cathedral.

St Nicholas Cathedral stands as a testament to the resilience and faith of Russian immigrants. These people sought refuge from political turmoil in their homeland. Construction of the cathedral began in 1935. It was completed in the early 1950s. This cathedral is located at 330-334B Vulture Street Kangaroo Point.

The story of St Nicholas Cathedral begins with the influx of Russian emigrants to Queensland. This wave of immigration occurred primarily between 1911 and 1914. Many were escaping political repression and state-inspired pogroms. They fled Russia via Siberia and Northern China. They then sailed from Dalian to Australian ports like Townsville and Brisbane.

Despite this early wave of immigration, a formal Russian Orthodox parish was not established in Queensland until later. Many associated Russian Orthodoxy with the Tsarist system they were fleeing. It wasn’t until the arrival of Father Alexander Shabasheff in 1923 that things began to change.

Father Shabasheff obtained the use of St Thomas’ Church of England. He created a space for Russian Orthodox immigrants to worship. A Russian Orthodox parish was established at South Brisbane in 1925. A cottage at 330 Vulture Street was purchased and converted into a church in 1925-1926.

As the Russian community grew a purpose-designed church became a priority. Father Valentine Antonieff was appointed to the parish of St Nicholas in 1933. Fundraising commenced for a new church to be erected on the site of the existing church. It would serve as a memorial to the last Russian Tsar, Nicholas II.

Gregory Mechonoshin, a local parishioner and engineer, created a basic plan for the new church. Cavanagh and Cavanagh architects prepared formal plans. B Robinson was awarded the building contract. Construction began in 1935. It was likely finished in early 1936. Greek Orthodox Archbishop Timotheos consecrated the church in October 1936.

Local Russian immigrants constructed and decorated the iconostasis and royal gates. The movable icons and chandelier are of Russian or Chinese origin. They were donated by the widow of Father Tourchinsky. The cathedral also featured a shrine to Tsar Nicholas II.

In December 1946, the Diocese of Australia was established. Bishop Theodore Rafalsky was appointed as its head. St Nicholas Church became Australia’s first Russian Orthodox Cathedral in November 1948. The seat of Russian Orthodoxy was relocated to Sydney in 1950. This was due to its central location and larger Russian immigrant population.

Today St Nicholas Cathedral remains integral to Russian culture and religion in Brisbane. Services are conducted in Church Slavonic. English-language services are held every two months. The church maintains an important library of Russian works.

As you stand before St Nicholas Cathedral consider its significance. It is a symbol of faith, community, and cultural preservation. The cathedral’s architecture reflects Russian religious traditions. It is adapted to local materials and the passage of time. The St Nicholas Cathedral contributes significantly to the streetscape. It stands as a lasting legacy of Brisbane’s Russian community.
