Didn’t they say that necessity is the mother of invention? Well, Maple Hall here at CSUN is proof of that. CSUN needed more classrooms. It got Maple Hall. This building is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a testament to overcoming challenges. It’s a space designed for collaboration and learning.

Maple Hall, completed in 2024, stands as CSUN’s first new academic building since 2009. The $46.8-million Maple Hall spans 62,000 square feet. It serves as a gateway to the campus, welcoming students and faculty alike. The design centers around a three-story atrium. Natural light floods the interior.

Inside Maple Hall, you’ll find a variety of learning spaces. There is a 3,050-square-foot auditorium. There are also two lecture halls, four seminar rooms, and multiple classrooms. These classrooms are adaptable. Furniture can be configured for lectures or breakout sessions. This encourages collaboration among students and professors.

The construction of Maple Hall wasn’t without its hurdles. The team faced material availability issues. They had to find a substitute for the specified roof insulation. Crews also discovered caissons and an oil-filled pipe underground. They resequenced construction activities. They safely removed these obstacles. Despite these challenges, the project team mitigated potential supply chain delays.

The original opening date was pushed back due to construction delays. These delays were caused by global supply chain issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic. High levels of rain in 2023 also contributed. The team used the extra time to address leaks. This ensured the building could withstand future rainfall.

Maple Hall finally opened on March 25, after spring break. It was formerly known as the Sierra Annex. The primary purpose of Maple Hall is to relocate classes from the older Sierra Hall. About 557 classes were moved into Maple Hall’s 38 classrooms. Sierra Hall, opened in 1963, is one of the largest and oldest buildings on campus.

Students can enjoy spacious classrooms, a lounge, and collaboration areas. These spaces provide opportunities to sit and work between classes. Faculty members received training on the new technological features. The classrooms are designed to allow faculty to optimize the spaces.

Maple Hall targets LEED Gold certification. Its energy-efficient design reflects CSUN’s commitment to sustainability. Maple Hall showcases CSUN’s dedication to providing a modern, adaptable learning environment. So, as you explore Maple Hall, remember its story. It’s a story of innovation. It’s a story of resilience.
