Eleanor Roosevelt High Residence stands on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. It is a small public high school with a big impact. About 500 students attend. They come from over 40 countries.

Originally, the high school was in a temporary location in Chelsea. There were only 105 ninth graders. The staff numbered just eight. Today, Eleanor Roosevelt High School has grown. It now has over 45 staff members.

Each year, the school chooses between 125 and 140 students. Over 6000 apply. Many students pick this school over specialized high schools. They want a more liberal curriculum. In 2021, U.S. News & World Report ranked Eleanor Roosevelt High School as the 81st best public high school in the nation.

Eleanor Roosevelt High School offers many Advanced Placement courses. These include AP Biology, AP Calculus and AP English. Students can also study AP United States History. AP World History is required in the 10th grade. Those with New York Regents credit in U.S. History can take AP Art History instead.

Extracurricular activities are abundant at Eleanor Roosevelt High Residence. The school is part of the Public Schools Athletic League. There are varsity sports like baseball and basketball. Club sports include cross country and fencing.

Student organizations flourish here too. There is an Art 4 Heart Club and an Asian Culture Club. Students can join the Debate Club. They might also enjoy the Finance, Entrepreneurship, and Investment Club. The ElRo PawPrint is the school newspaper.

The building itself has an interesting past. It began as a two-story garage in 1922. Later, upper floors were added. It housed automotive and manufacturing businesses. Before becoming a school, it was Sotheby’s warehouse. The conversion to a school occurred in 2002-2003.
