“Did pirates ever bury treasure on Isla San Ramón?” a child’s voice piped up from the tour group. An excellent question, and one that whispers through the very air around Isla San Ramón. This small island, nestled in Lake Nicaragua, just a short boat trip from Granada, holds secrets as deep as the lake itself. While no documented pirate treasure has ever been unearthed on Isla San Ramón, the island certainly saw its share of pirate activity in the 17th and 18th centuries. Granada, a wealthy trading hub, was a tempting target. Pirates, seeking gold, silver, and timber, would sail up the San Juan River, hoping to plunder the city’s riches. Isla San Ramón, and the other 360 islets scattered across Lake Nicaragua, offered hiding places for these would-be raiders. While these islands could offer strategic vantage points, they also posed challenges. The native Nicaragua shark and sawfish patrolled the lake’s waters, a surprising twist for a freshwater environment. Now, Isla San Ramón offers a tranquil escape. But the echoes of history, the whispers of pirate ships and hidden treasures, still linger in the air, inviting us to imagine what life was like on this small island centuries ago.
