“A ghostly whisper” brushed against my ear. It spoke of the Wallich family their lives intertwined with Villa Schwengberg. This isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to history.

Villa Schwengberg stands majestically before you. Its elegant lines speak volumes. Designed in 1843 by Ludwig Persius for Kurd von Schoning the villa boasts a beautiful Italian style. It originally replaced a simple skipper’s house. The name however is a tribute to the Schoning family’s origins in Schoningen East Brunswick.

The villa’s story doesn’t end with its construction. After von Schoning’s death in 1859 his children sold it to Prince Carl of Prussia. It later passed to Moritz Jacoby who gifted it to his daughter Anna and her husband Hermann Wallich.

The Wallich family used Villa Schwengberg primarily as a summer residence. Their son Paul lived there with his family. However the dark shadow of the Nazi regime loomed. Tragically Paul Wallich committed suicide in 1938. The political climate was unbearable for him. His family had already escaped Germany. None returned after the war. The villa became a military hospital under Soviet occupation. The weight of history is palpable within these walls.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall Villa Schwengberg served as a daycare until 1993. It was then returned to the Wallich family who eventually sold it. Sadly the building stood neglected. Demolition was considered. But fortunately Mathias Dopfiner and Leonhard Fischer purchased it. They restored Villa Schwengberg in accordance with German heritage requirements.

Today you stand at the site of a fascinating transformation. Villa Schwengberg is more than a restored building. It’s a place where history breathes where personal stories echo. It’s a legacy preserved not forgotten a testament to resilience and rebirth. Villa Schwengberg awaits you. Explore its history and let its stories linger long after your visit.
