The Parroquia Nuestra Señora de la Salud’s story begins not here but with a miraculous Christ statue. In the 17th century. Sick patients at the Hospital de los Hermanos de San Juan de Dios prayed to it. They sought healing. Their prayers were answered so often. The statue became known as the Santísimo Cristo de la Salud the most holy Christ of health.
The hospital eventually closed. The statue needed a new home. It found it in the nearby church of San Nicolás. There it resided until 1915. Then a new church was built for it. Specifically for the Santísimo Cristo de la Salud. A grand new building. A fitting home for such a revered image. This new home? Our very own Parroquia Nuestra Señora de la Salud.
King Alfonso XIII and Queen Victoria Eugenia themselves laid the first stone. The new church was finished in 1918. They were present at its grand opening. The celebration was huge. The Cristo de la Salud was even paraded through the city. A glorious procession from San Nicolás to its new home on Calle Ayala.

Thousands of Madrileños joined this congregation. From humble citizens to royalty. Even famous figures like Velázquez sought its protection. The devotion transcended social class.
