It’s a testament to perseverance against incredible odds. The Edward R Roybal Learning Center stands as a symbol of community resilience. Its story begins not with a simple groundbreaking but with years of setbacks. Initially planned as the Belmont Learning Center in 1988 the project aimed to alleviate overcrowding at Belmont High School. The land however held a dark secret. Beneath the surface lay an old oil field. This released methane and hydrogen sulfide gases halting construction in 1999. Imagine the delays the frustrations. Then came another blow. In 2002 an earthquake fault was discovered under the partially built structure. More than half the buildings had to be demolished. The Edward R Roybal Learning Center’s construction became synonymous with high costs and unexpected problems. The final price tag reached an estimated $400 million. Yet despite these obstacles the project persevered. In 2003 a new construction firm took over. By 2008 the Edward R Roybal Learning Center finally opened its doors. The school’s name itself is a tribute. It honors former city councilman and Congressman Edward R Roybal a champion of the community this school serves. He was a pioneer a fighter for social justice. The Edward R Roybal Learning Center is more than bricks and mortar. It is a symbol of the Latino community’s strength and determination. The Edward R Roybal Learning Center opened with four small learning communities. These included the International School of Languages the Activists for Educational Empowerment the Business and Finance Academy and the Computer Science Academy. Two independent pilot schools Civitas School of Leadership and the School for Visual Arts and Humanities also joined. The Edward R Roybal Learning Center now houses magnet programs too. The Roybal School of Film and Television Production opened in 2021 thanks to support from Hollywood stars. This reflects the school’s dedication to providing opportunities in film and television.
