Did the Yongding Tower always stand here, a silent sentinel watching over Beijing? Not quite. Let’s journey back to 1553, to the Ming Dynasty. This magnificent structure, the Yongding Tower, was erected as the front gate of Beijing’s outer city wall. It was a symbol of lasting peace, “Yongding,” a promise etched in stone and brick. The Yongding Tower wasn’t just a gate. It was the starting point of Beijing’s Central Axis, a 7.8km line stretching north to the Drum and Bell Towers. This axis, with the Yongding Tower at its southern tip, was a testament to ancient Chinese urban planning. Emperors believed their palaces should sit at the center of the world, literally. The axis, running from south to north through the heart of Beijing, reflected this belief. The Yongding Tower bore witness to history, including a dark moment during the Boxer Rebellion. In 1900, near this very spot, a Japanese legation secretary was tragically killed. Sadly, in 1957, progress demanded sacrifice. The Yongding Tower was demolished to ease traffic congestion. Yet, like a phoenix from the ashes, it was reborn in 2004. The meticulous reconstruction, based on archaeological data and historical records, ensured the Yongding Tower returned to its rightful place. Now, it anchors the southern end of Beijing’s Central Axis, a proud reminder of a rich and enduring past. As you stand before the Yongding Tower, take a moment to appreciate its grandeur. It’s more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a symbol of resilience, a bridge between centuries, and a gateway to understanding Beijing’s heart and soul.
