How did the Musèe Matisse in Nice come to be? It’s a story of art a villa and a city’s devotion. The Musèe Matisse stands before you a vibrant testament to Henri Matisse’s genius. The museum is not just a collection of art. It is a journey through the life and work of a remarkable artist.

The story begins in 1963. The city of Nice established the Musèe Matisse to honor the French painter Henri Matisse. It was initially housed in the Villa des Arènes a beautiful seventeenth-century Genoese villa. This villa itself has a story. Constructed between 1670 and 1685 it was first known as the Gubernatis palace. Jean-Baptiste Gubernatis consul of Nice sponsored it. In 1950 the City of Nice acquired the villa giving it its current name.

Matisse had a deep connection to Nice. He lived and worked here from 1917 to 1954. The museum’s collection largely stems from Matisse’s own works and donations from his heirs. Over time the collection grew significantly. Today the Musèe Matisse boasts one of the world’s largest collections of Matisse’s art. It showcases his artistic evolution through paintings drawings sculptures and his famous cut-outs.

Stepping inside you’ll discover 68 paintings and gouaches. You’ll also find 236 drawings 218 prints and 95 photographs. Furthermore there are 57 sculptures and 14 illustrated books. The museum also houses 187 objects that belonged to Matisse himself. These include prints tapestries ceramics stained glass and documents.

The Musèe Matisse not only displays art. It also reveals the artist’s creative process. Henri Matisse saw his studio as more than a workspace. He considered it the engine of his inspiration. The museum now houses 130 objects from his studio including furniture textiles and accessories. You can also view photographs of Matisse at work taken by renowned photographers.

In 1993 the museum expanded to accommodate its growing collection. Architect Jean-François Bodin designed a new wing. It provided modern exhibition spaces a bookstore and administrative areas. The expansion harmonized with the villa’s original architecture and the surrounding olive groves.

The Musèe Matisse is more than just an art museum. It is a cultural hub. It houses thousands of archived documents. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions related to Matisse and his artistic context. In 2024 the Musèe Matisse will host two temporary exhibitions. One will focus on the painter Djamel Tatah. The other will explore the relationship between Henri Matisse and Joan Miró.

The Musèe Matisse has been awarded the Musée de France label. This designation recognizes the museum’s quality and the State’s support.

Take a moment to appreciate the Villa des Arènes’ elegant red facade. Notice the numerous windows and the luxurious decorations inside.
