Did the Chapelle Sainte-Croix always look this grand? The Chapelle Sainte-Croix, also known as the Chapel of the White Penitents, stands before us as a testament to Baroque grandeur. Yet, its current appearance is a result of centuries of construction and renovation. The original structure was built by the Minimes order in 1633. The chapel we see today underwent a partial reconstruction between 1765 and 1767. This renovation was led by architect Antoine Spinelli. He also designed the distinctive Baroque bell tower. The facade, though, received a touch-up in 1875. Inside, the Chapelle Sainte-Croix boasts a rich history connected to the White Penitents. This brotherhood, devoted to helping the ill, founded a small hospital. Notice the recurring theme of the cross throughout the chapel’s interior. It reflects the brotherhood’s devotion and echoes the motto “In hoc signo vinces” (“By this sign you shall conquer”). Look up to admire the medallions depicting the Invention of the Cross by Saint Helena in 326. Another medallion features Saint Bonaventure, the founder of penitent brotherhoods. The Chapelle Sainte-Croix isn’t just a beautiful building. It is a symbol of faith, service, and the enduring legacy of the White Penitents in Nice.
