Ever wonder where champions train? Here at Canyonview Aquatics and Activities Center, you’re standing on hallowed ground for aquatic athletes. This isn’t just a pool. It’s a training center for UC San Diego’s finest.

Canyonview Aquatics Center is located on the eastern end of the campus. Find it nestled between Eleanor Roosevelt College and Warren College. Since its completion in 1983, Canyonview has been a hub for aquatic sports. The initial project cost was $1.8 million. Back then, it was the only publicly accessible long-course pool in San Diego.

Look around. You will spot two Olympic-size pools. Each can be divided into eight lanes of 50 meters. Alternatively, they configure into 19 lanes of 25 yards. These adaptable pools support various training needs.

The West Pool opened on February 8, 2006. Notice its dimensions. It measures 50 meters by 25 yards. The depth is a consistent seven feet. Impressively, it holds 680,000 gallons of water. Bleacher seating accommodates 1,000 spectators. A new weight room and locker rooms enhance the facility. The architects Hanna, Gabriel, and Wells designed this pool. Matthew Wells was the principal architect. Aquatic Design Group handled the pool’s specific design. Taylor-Frager was the General Contractor. Mission Pools completed the pool construction.

The East Pool offers its own set of features. It is heated year-round to a comfortable 80-85 degrees. Bleacher seating is available for 336 people. Additional grass seating can accommodate up to 1,000 more. Men’s and women’s locker rooms are equipped with showers. Lights illuminate the deck for night use. The diving area includes one 5-meter platform. There are also two 3-meter platforms and two 1-meter platforms.

Did you know that Canyonview made it into the Guinness Book of World Records? In April 1989, 26 continuous hours of water polo were played here. Imagine the stamina and dedication.

Inside, you’ll find a state-of-the-art weight room. It spans 1,850 square feet. It’s equipped with lifting equipment specific for aquatic training.

Canyonview Aquatics Center has hosted significant events. The NCAA Men’s Water Polo Championship was held here in 1996, 1999, and 2014. In 2003, the NCAA Women’s Water Polo Championship took place here.

Canyonview Aquatic Center is more than just a sports venue. It’s a place where athletes push their limits. It is a place where records are broken, and history is made. As you leave, remember the legacy of Canyonview.
