Whispers of miracles still linger within these ancient stones. Before you stands the Chapelle Saint-Hospice a testament to faith resilience and a captivating past.

This unassuming chapel in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat boasts a history stretching back centuries. Built in the 11th century on the ruins of an older sanctuary it bears the name of a remarkable Benedictine monk Hospitius. Legend paints a vivid picture of Hospitius living in a nearby tower around 575 AD. He lived in utter poverty inflicting harsh penances upon himself. His piety was legendary.

Hospitius predicted the Lombard invasion of the coast. When the barbarians arrived one tried to kill the hermit. Miraculously the would-be assassin’s arm became paralyzed. Struck by Hospitius’ serene demeanor the Lombards spared his life. Numerous miraculous healings are attributed to him including those of a deaf-mute a blind man and a woman possessed by demons.

The oldest record of the Chapelle Saint-Hospice dates back to 1075. Centuries later in 1615 the chapel found itself at the heart of a fort. Charles-Emmanuel I of Savoy built it for protection during a French invasion attempt. The chapel was enlarged in 1655. An altar was added giving it the form we see today.

The fort was destroyed in 1706 by order of Louis XIV. The chapel suffered damage during the French Revolution. It wasn’t reopened for worship until 1826. The portico you see today dates from that restoration. The chapel was once a significant pilgrimage site. It held up to 140 ex-votos though those are sadly lost to time. Inside you can still admire paintings by Louis Marchand des Raux depicting Saint Hospice’s life and miracles.

In 1903 a magnificent bronze statue of the Virgin Mary and Child was added. A Nice merchant commissioned it as a fulfillment of a vow. It stands 11.4 meters tall the work of Italian sculptor Tranquillo Galbusieri.

The Chapelle Saint-Hospice has faced challenges and undergone restorations. Yet it stands as a living reminder of faith perseverance and the enduring power of legend. Step inside. Let the whispers of history and miracles envelop you. Let the spirit of Saint Hospitius touch your soul.
