In 1928, a cornerstone was laid. This cornerstone marked the beginning of the Oakwood Heights Community Church. The church stands here today as a testament to a century of service. Oakwood Heights Community Church isn’t just a building. It’s a living chronicle of the community it serves. The church has seen a procession of pastors, each leaving their mark. From Pearse Pinch in 1927 to Nancy Hazzard, who currently leads the flock, their stories intertwine with the church’s history. The church is more than just a place of Sunday worship. It’s a community hub. It’s a place where the Grief and Loss Group finds solace. Where Music Together classes fill the air with joyful melodies. Where Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts learn and grow. Even Alcoholics Anonymous finds a supportive space within these walls. Oakwood Heights Community Church is a Congregational Church. This means the members govern the church. They believe no one stands between them and Jesus Christ. This self-governing principle traces back to 16th-century England. It echoes the spirit of the Separatists who demanded the right to choose their own ministers and interpret the Bible for themselves. This emphasis on individual faith and self-governance has deep roots in American history. It’s a legacy that influenced the U.S. Constitution and fueled movements like the abolition of slavery and women’s suffrage. Today, Reverend Nancy Hazzard, with her diverse background, leads the church. From Peace Corps volunteer to professional musician and NYC public school teacher, her experiences have shaped her ministry. Her journey led her to the Center for Spiritual Living in New York City, where she was ordained in 2003. She even earned a Doctor of Divinity degree from the Emerson Theological Institute in California in 2018. She continues to serve her community at Oakwood Heights Community Church. The Oakwood Heights Community Church invites you to join them. They invite you to share in their century-long tradition of faith and community.
