“Imagine a kingfisher a bird of good omen” That’s what Kerylos means. Before you stands Villa Kerylos a stunning replica of an ancient Greek dwelling. It’s not just a building it’s a journey back in time.

This magnificent villa nestled on the Baie des Fourmis was the brainchild of Theodore Reinach a wealthy archaeologist. He wasn’t just interested in digging up the past he wanted to live it. So he built this amazing home between 1902 and 1908. He hired Emmanuel Pontremoli a talented architect to recreate the feel of a luxurious Greek home on the island of Delos.

But Villa Kerylos isn’t just a copy. Reinach incorporated modern conveniences of the Belle Epoque era like plumbing and underfloor heating. He wanted the best of both worlds ancient charm and modern comfort.

Notice the peristyle the large courtyard with 12 Carrara marble columns. It’s the heart of the villa. The rooms are dedicated to Greek deities. Theodore’s room features ocher and reds evoking the passion of Eros. His wife Fanny’s room is a tranquil blue a tribute to Hera.

Tragedy struck the Reinach family later. During World War II the Nazis confiscated their home. The family was deported and perished in Auschwitz in 1943. Other heirs lived here until 1967 when the villa finally became a museum.

Look closely at the details. The mosaics the frescoes the furniture. Every piece was carefully chosen or recreated to be true to the ancient Greek style. The library contains art and archaeology books just as Theodore Reinach would have had. Imagine him working at his standing desk just like the ancient Greeks did.

Even the bathrooms are a marvel. They may have modern plumbing but they’re designed in a typical Greek style. The Carrara marble bathtub is a luxurious touch.

Villa Kerylos is more than a museum. It’s a testament to one man’s passion for ancient Greece. It’s a reminder of a family’s story and a piece of history preserved for us to enjoy. Take a moment to soak in the beauty and imagine the life lived within these walls. It is truly a remarkable place.
