“Did you hear about the man who prayed for healing and then built a temple?” I ask, gesturing towards the Wat Dubphai. Wat Dubphai might be a smaller temple, but its story is anything but insignificant. Legend has it that centuries ago, a very sick man prayed to a Buddha image named Phra Chao Dab Pai for recovery. When he miraculously recovered, he showed his gratitude by building this temple. He named it Wat Dubphai in honor of the image that he believed saved him. Look around and take in the beautiful Lanna-style architecture. The viharn, or assembly hall, is especially striking with its two-tiered roof, golden bargeboards ending in Naga heads, and a stairway guarded by white and gold Naga serpents. The ornate gable above, adorned with colorful Lanna-style flower motifs, speaks volumes about the artistry prevalent during its creation. Inside, the viharn holds the temple’s principal Buddha image, a vision in gold, positioned in the subduing Mara posture. Behind this serene figure, a mural of the Bodhi tree completes the scene, reminding us of Buddha’s enlightenment. Wat Dubphai isn’t just a feast for the eyes. It whispers tales of faith, healing, and gratitude, echoing the very essence of Buddhist teachings.
