Have you noticed how this statue seems to rise from the very ocean? Right before us stands the majestic Thiruvalluvar Statue. It is a tribute to the poet and philosopher Thiruvalluvar. He authored the Thirukkural. This ancient Tamil work speaks of morality.

Thiruvalluvar lived over 2,000 years ago. He penned 1330 verses within 133 chapters. The statue was the vision of M. Karunanidhi. He was the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Construction spanned 1975 to 1976. This very spot was once a lake. It even served as a dumping ground.

The Thiruvalluvar Statue stands tall at 41 meters. That is 135 feet. It is a sculpture of stone. V. Ganapati Sthapati designed it. He also designed the Iraivan Temple. The statue was unveiled on January 1, 2000.

The combined height signifies the 133 chapters of the Thirukkural. The 38-foot pedestal represents virtue. The 95-foot sculpture symbolizes wealth and love. The design shows wealth and love are built on virtue.

Look closely at the statue’s right hand. Three fingers point skywards. They represent virtue, wealth, and love. The statue’s head reaches 61 meters above sea level. The slight bend at the waist echoes a dancing pose. It is reminiscent of Hindu deities like Nataraja. The statue is heavy. It weighs 7,000 tonnes.

The Thiruvalluvar Statue represents a cultural fusion. It stands near the Vivekananda Rock Memorial. The statue has a hollow portion inside. It runs from toe to scalp.

The foundation stone was laid in 1979. Actual sculpting began in 1990. The project cost over ₹61.4 million. About 150 workers were employed. They worked long hours to complete it. Sculptors used wooden prototypes. This helped tackle the dance pose design.

Stonework was divided among three workshops. They were in Kanniyakumari, Ambasamudram, and Sholinganallur. The largest stones weighed over 15 tonnes. The face is 6 meters high. Each feature is made of individual stones.

The statue was placed on its pedestal in 1999. M. Karunanidhi inaugurated it in 2000. The chief minister called it a beacon of light. It guides human life.

The 2004 tsunami did not affect the statue. It is designed to survive earthquakes.

To protect against corrosion, the statue undergoes chemical treatment. This happens every four years. Salty deposits are removed and replaced.

In January 2025, it was declared the Statue of Wisdom. A glass bridge connects it to the mainland. It is India’s first such bridge.

The Thiruvalluvar Statue is more than a monument. It is a symbol of wisdom. It embodies the timeless teachings of Thiruvalluvar. May his wisdom continue to inspire us all.
