“Psst, want to know a secret?” Malaz Zoo is more than just a collection of animals. It is a story of royal whim, public outcry, and dedication to conservation.

Malaz Zoo, formerly known as Riyadh Zoological Gardens, is a 55-acre haven. It is located in the al-Malaz neighborhood of Riyadh. This zoo is not just large, it is the oldest in Saudi Arabia. Over 1,500 animals from around 196 species call it home.

But here is a twist. The zoo began as King Saud bin Abdulaziz’s private menagerie in 1957. He received exotic animals as gifts. Imagine a king’s personal collection growing so large it needed its own space.

The crowds wanting to see the animals became too large for the palace grounds. So, the menagerie moved to al-Malaz. It became the Riyadh Zoological Gardens. In 1981, the original structure was torn down. A new public zoo opened six years later in 1987. London-based consultants designed it.

Now, here is a tale of woe and redemption. By 2007, the zoo was in decline. Mismanagement led to fewer visitors. An Al Riyadh newspaper article highlighted the animals’ miserable conditions.

Prince Abdulaziz bin Ayyaf Muqrin al-Saud, the Mayor of Riyadh, stepped in. He ordered a full rehabilitation in 2008. Before this, visitors over 12 were not allowed in the zoo. A frustrated Saudi national wrote a column in Al Eqtisadiah newspaper. He asked the Riyadh Municipality to allow families. The government listened.

By 2009, the zoo had revived. Visitor numbers increased by 200%. It became a top tourist destination for families.

Malaz Zoo is part of the Arabian Zoo and Aquarium Association. It participates in regional conservation efforts.

The zoo showcases a diverse collection of animals. You will find everything from seals and kangaroos to lions and elephants. Endangered species of Saudi Arabia also live here. Look out for the Arabian oryx and the Arabian desert leopard.

Families love the 20-minute train ride. It gives a tour of the entire zoo. But beware of the tigers.

In 2019, a visitor jumped into the royal Bengal tiger enclosure. The zoo authorities quickly drugged the tigress. They saved the man.

So, as you wander through Malaz Zoo, remember its journey. From royal menagerie to public space, it has faced challenges. Today, it stands as a testament to conservation. It is a place where families can connect with the animal kingdom.
