Founded in 1888, Guangdong Guangya High School stands before us. It is not just any school. Guangya is one of China’s most respected educational institutions. Imagine walking through these gates over a century ago.
Zhang Zhidong, Viceroy of Liangguang, established Guangya Academy. He sought to promote scholarship and cultivate an educated society. The name “Guangya” itself signifies knowledgeability and integrity. Zhang Zhidong chose it carefully.
Initially, the academy occupied over 20 acres. Construction cost a staggering 138866 taels of silver. Liang Dingfen, a trusted scholar, became the first head of Guangya.
Guangya High School has evolved through China’s tumultuous history. It began as a traditional academy. Here, students studied “Chinese learning for fundamental principles, Western learning for practical application”. This doctrine shaped the curriculum.
In 1912, the academy transformed into Guangdong Provincial No. 1 High School. This marked the beginning of modern secondary education in Guangdong. The school adopted a Western-style system. It offered three-year junior and senior programs.
The school’s name has changed several times. In 1935, it was renamed Guangdong Provincial Guangya High School. During the Cultural Revolution, it became “Red Flag” High School. Later, it was known as Guangzhou No. 54 High School. Finally, in 1979, the name Guangdong “Guangya” High School was restored. It has remained ever since.
Today, Guangya High School maintains its reputation for academic excellence. The motto is “Endeavor in the Fundamentals and Pursue the Truth”. This reflects the school’s commitment to knowledge and character.
Guangya has expanded beyond its original campus. There are now multiple campuses in Guangdong. These include privately funded schools. Guangya Experimental School was established in 2002. Another campus opened in Baiyun District in 2011.
Guangya prepares students for top universities. Over 60% of students enter key universities in China. More than 97% find a place in a Chinese university.
Guangya High School has achieved excellent scores in education. It has been praised by national, provincial, and municipal governments. In the 34-year history of the college entrance examination, there are 39 highest-ranking students in different subjects from Guangya High School.
Guangya High School is partnered with Tower Bridge International Education. Together, they operate an international high school program. This program serves grades 10 to 12. Guangya prepares students by providing a rigorous academic program.
As we stand here, remember Guangya’s legacy. It is a story of transformation. It is a story of enduring commitment to education. Guangdong Guangya High School continues to shape future generations.
