Ever wonder how far love and grief can go? In Linden, New Jersey, at Roselawn Cemetery, sits the Stone Mercedes 240D. It’s not just a car; it’s a monument to a dream unfulfilled. The Stone Mercedes 240D is a full-sized replica, carved from 30 tons of granite. It marks the resting place of Raymond Tse, a teenager who tragically passed away at 15. Raymond dreamed of owning a Mercedes. His older brother, David, promised to buy him one when he was old enough. Sadly, fate intervened.

David, heartbroken but determined, decided to fulfill his promise in a unique way. He commissioned a granite Mercedes for Raymond’s memorial. The Stone Mercedes 240D wasn’t an easy project. The model Raymond loved was a stretched version, unavailable in the U.S. David secured design plans from Mercedes in Germany. A massive 66-ton block of granite was sourced. It took sculptor Dante Rossi and two others thirteen months to carve the Stone Mercedes 240D.

Transporting the 32-ton sculpture from Vermont to New Jersey was another feat. Special insurance and rigging were required to move the single piece of granite. The Stone Mercedes 240D rests behind an impressive mausoleum. Two granite foo dogs guard the entrance, a testament to the family’s Chinese heritage. During construction, the Tse family surprised the builders by placing fireworks in the foo dogs. This Chinese custom, meant to ward off evil spirits, added a dramatic flourish to the project.

The Stone Mercedes 240D is more than just a grave marker. It’s a symbol of brotherly love, a tribute to a lost dream, and a unique piece of art that captures the attention of all who visit Roselawn Cemetery. It offers a moment of reflection, a reminder that even in grief, beauty and love can endure.
