Where science meets history. That’s Rue Pasteur. It is more than just a street. It is a journey into Lille’s scientific and architectural past.

Rue Pasteur is named after Louis Pasteur. He was the first dean of the Faculty of Science in Lille. That was from 1854 to 1857. Pasteur laid the foundation for modern microbiology here. He worked with local brewers.

But the story of Rue Pasteur is really intertwined with the Institut Pasteur de Lille. This private foundation is independent of the Institut Pasteur in Paris. It was created with Louis Pasteur’s agreement. The institute gained public recognition in 1898. It became part of the international Pasteur Institute network. The institute is associated with the University of Lille. It also works with the Lille University Hospital, Inserm, and the CNRS. The institute focuses on fundamental and applied research. It studies health issues related to humans and the environment.

The creation of the Institut Pasteur de Lille was triggered by a diphtheria epidemic in 1894. The health council sought out Dr. Emile Roux in Paris. Roux had developed a serum for diphtheria. Roux suggested creating a center in Lille. It would be similar to the Pasteur Institute in Paris. Louis Pasteur approved. He appointed Dr. Albert Calmette as director.

Dr. Calmette quickly established a serum production center. It was temporarily located in the former Faculty of Science. Public support helped finance the institute. The city of Lille donated land. Businesses and the public provided financial assistance. The first stone was laid soon after. The Institut Pasteur de Lille gained public recognition. It was inaugurated in the presence of ministers and scientists. Madame Pasteur and her family also attended. The Institut cost 972,000 F. Albert Calmette contributed 300,000 F from his own funds.

The building’s architecture reflects eclecticism. It stands on Boulevard Louis XIV. This placement connects it to Lille’s modernization in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The most significant discovery at the Institut Pasteur de Lille is the BCG vaccine. Biologist Albert Calmette and veterinarian Camille Guérin developed it. They researched a tuberculosis vaccine. They modified a strain of Mycobacterium bovis. They cultivated it on potato slices in sterile bile. The strain lost its virulence but remained immunogenic. This became the BCG vaccine. It is the most widely used vaccine in the world.

In February 2020, experts at the Institut Pasteur de Lille formed a task force. They aimed to find a treatment for the SARS-CoV-2 virus. By September 2020, they identified clofoctol as a potential drug. Clinical trials were approved in June 2021.

Today, the Institut Pasteur de Lille spans two hectares. It includes 50,000 square meters of laboratories. It maintains its scientific, economic, and legal identity. The campus also houses the Lille Institute of Biology. There is also a Health Prevention Longevity Center. A museum showcases its history and discoveries. The 1894 event space is also located here.

The Institut Pasteur de Lille comprises eight research units. These units have multidisciplinary expertise. It supports twelve technology platforms. The campus has 811 employees. This includes researchers, engineers, and technicians.

The extension of the Institut Pasteur de Lille was built around 2007. It features contemporary architecture. The extension includes five levels. It reaches an estimated height of 20 meters.

Rue Pasteur is a testament to Lille’s commitment to science. The street embodies innovation and progress. It is home to the Institut Pasteur de Lille. It has contributed significantly to global health. The discoveries made here have saved countless lives. As you walk along Rue Pasteur, remember the legacy of Pasteur, Calmette, and Guérin. Their work continues to impact our world.
