“A bitter truth,” that’s what Maxim Gorky sought to reveal. Now, standing before you is a place linked to his legacy. This is about Maxim Gorky in Moscow.

Maxim Gorky. The name itself translates to “bitter.” It was a fitting pseudonym for Alexei Maximovich Peshkov. He was a writer who exposed the harsh realities of Russian life.

Gorky’s journey began in Nizhny Novgorod. He became an orphan at a young age. Raised by his grandmother, he left home at twelve. He wandered the Russian Empire for five years. During that time, he took on various jobs and gathered experiences. Those experiences would later shape his writing.

He used the name Gorky in 1892. His first book, “Essays and Stories”, came out in 1898. It was a sensation and launched his career. Maxim Gorky wrote tirelessly. He saw literature as a moral and political force. He described the lives of those on the margins of society. He showed their hardships and their humanity.

Maxim Gorky became associated with the Marxist movement. He befriended Vladimir Lenin. Gorky’s plays, like “The Lower Depths”, gained him fame. During the 1905 Revolution, he was briefly imprisoned.

From 1906 to 1913, Gorky lived on the island of Capri. He later returned to Russia. After his return, he found that everyone was crushed. He believed that the solution was culture.

After the 1917 revolution, Gorky criticized the Bolsheviks. He was against censorship and repression. In 1921, he left Russia again due to health reasons. In 1932, Gorky returned to the Soviet Union. Stalin invited him back. This return was a major propaganda victory for the Soviets.

Gorky received a mansion in Moscow. It once belonged to the millionaire Ryabushinsky. Today, this building houses a museum about Maxim Gorky. The house is known among Muscovites as the house with beautiful iris mosaics on it.

Inside Gorky’s House, you can see his original library. It holds his belongings. The museum keeps the interior as Gorky knew it. The magnate’s family were Old Believers. Guests can visit the Old Believers’ chapel in the attic. The main decoration of the house is the waved staircase made of Estonian marble. It symbolizes an uneasy situation in Russian society at the beginning of the 20th century.

Maxim Gorky died in 1936. His death remains a subject of speculation.

Today, Gorky is remembered as a founder of Socialist Realism. He was a complex figure. His life and work reflected the turbulent times he lived through. As you leave this place, remember Maxim Gorky’s commitment to revealing the “bitter truth.” His stories continue to resonate.
