A beacon of faith amidst the vibrant tapestry of Atlanta, East Point Christian Church has a captivating story to tell. East Point Christian Church stands as a testament to the power of faith and community. Its story begins not in a grand cathedral, but in the humble abode of Mr. and Mrs. George Starrett. In the summer of 1952, they opened their home at 4543 Norton Lane to host a Vacation Bible School for neighborhood children. The spark ignited there continued to glow. A small group continued meeting regularly, their faith deepening with each gathering. On December 14, 1952, twenty-one souls gathered in the Starrett’s home for Sunday worship. This marked the birth of Norton Church of Christ, the precursor to the East Point Christian Church we know today. Under the part-time ministry of Jim Grooms, the congregation flourished. By mid-1954, the Starrett home could no longer contain their growing numbers. The church rented space at Whitehall-Yearling High School and called their first full-time minister, Lloyd Dunn. In April 1955, they acquired a dedicated building on just over two acres of land at 441 S. Yearling Road. This marked a significant milestone in the church’s journey. Years passed, and the church continued to grow, serving the community with unwavering dedication. On September 19, 1999, a new chapter began. Norton Church of Christ became East Point Christian Church, a name that reflected their mission to reach the eastside of Columbus. This name change symbolized not a shift in values, but an expansion of their reach. The church purchased land for relocation in November 1999 and moved into its new facility on Waggoner Road in November 2004. Today, East Point Christian Church in Atlanta stands as a thriving testament to its humble beginnings. It serves as a place of worship, community, and connection, touching countless lives with its message of faith. From a small Bible study group to a dynamic church, East Point Christian Church’s journey embodies the power of faith to bring people together and create a lasting impact.
