Have you ever stood on a beach and felt the cool spray of the ocean on your face as you take in the endless horizon? That’s what Valadares is all about. Just outside of Porto, Valadares on the Atlantic Coast is a town that has been a popular destination for decades. The town in the municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia is known for its beautiful beach, lively nightlife, and its unique history. Valadares used to be a thriving center for ceramics. The locals would make clay pots and other useful objects in their homes. It is said that the name Valadares comes from the Portuguese word “vallado,” meaning obstacle or fence. This refers to the fortifications in Valadares that were built during the Iron Age. Over time, Valadares became a place of healing as well. More than a century ago, sanatoriums were built here due to the region being rich in iodine. Doctors noticed that the high level of iodine in the air helped treat people with various conditions, including bone fractures and tuberculosis. But this is also a place where a traditional dessert was born. The “Velhote,” a sweet bread full of the aromas of lemon and cinnamon, is said to have been created by a lady who came from Braga in the 19th century. And the best part, the traditional bread even made its way to the royal table when King Carlos I and Queen Amelia came to Porto. Today, Valadares is a place that blends history, nature, and traditions, and the beach offers a lively nightlife and a relaxed atmosphere during the day. If you’re in the mood for a refreshing ocean breeze, a piece of delicious “Velhote,” or just a taste of Portugal’s rich history, Valadares is a must-visit.
