Who was the mastermind behind Vietnam’s liberation from Ming rule? Right here on Nguyễn Trãi Street, we unravel the tale of a man whose brilliance shaped a nation, a poet whose words echoed through centuries, and a strategist whose cunning outwitted empires. Nguyễn Trãi, born in 1380 in Thăng Long, now Hanoi, wasn’t just a scholar; he was a beacon of hope during a turbulent era. Nguyễn Trãi’s life took a dramatic turn when Ming forces invaded Vietnam in 1406. His father, a respected official, was captured and exiled to China. Before his departure, he urged Nguyễn Trãi to avenge this insult to Vietnam. These words ignited a fire in young Nguyễn Trãi, fueling his unwavering commitment to liberate his homeland. He joined the rebel army of Lê Lợi, becoming the chief advisor, strategist, and propagandist.

Nguyễn Trãi’s strategic genius was instrumental in the decade-long war of independence. He employed guerilla tactics, exploited the enemy’s weaknesses, and penned powerful proclamations that rallied the Vietnamese people. One of his most famous works, “Bình Ngô đại cáo” (Great Proclamation upon the Pacification of the Wu), is considered one of Vietnam’s three official independence declarations. This eloquent document is still studied in Vietnamese schools today, a testament to Nguyễn Trãi’s enduring impact on the nation’s identity. Beyond military strategy, Nguyễn Trãi was a celebrated poet. His verses, known for their simplicity and honesty, captured the essence of life’s complexities. One can imagine him finding solace in poetry amidst the chaos of war.

Nguyễn Trãi’s story, however, takes a tragic twist. Following the war, he faced court intrigues and eventually retired to his mountain home. In 1442, a scandal erupted involving the young emperor, Lê Thái Tông, and Nguyễn Trãi’s wife. The emperor died unexpectedly after visiting Nguyễn Trãi’s estate, and Nguyễn Trãi was accused of regicide. He and his family were executed. Twenty years later, he was posthumously pardoned and declared innocent, a tragic end for a national hero. Despite the destruction of many of his writings, Nguyễn Trãi’s legacy lives on. His contributions to Vietnamese literature, military strategy, and political thought earned him recognition as a “World Cultural Celebrity” by UNESCO. So, the next time you find yourself on Nguyễn Trãi Street, remember the man whose name it bears – a scholar, a poet, a strategist, and a patriot whose life embodies the spirit of Vietnam.
