A splash of vibrant colors greets you. Welcome to Varsity Lake Park. This isn’t just any lake. It’s a man-made marvel older than the University of Malaya itself. Imagine a time when Varsity Lake was almost twice its current size. It even connected to Sungai Pantai.

Varsity Lake Park wasn’t just a pretty face. It was the heart of UM life. Students and staff held Water Carnivals there. Think duck-catching competitions pillow fights and boat races. Convocation week celebrations filled the air with joy. Community gotong-royong deepened the lake.

New residential college committee members even had a unique baptism. They were playfully ‘ducked’ in Varsity Lake after their oath of loyalty. It was all part of the fun.

Even the University’s Vice Chancellors played a role. Royal Professor Ungku Aziz initiated research on the lake. The late Tan Sri Abdullah Sanusi beautified its landscapes. Many undergraduates found inspiration in its beauty.

In 2014 Project ReviVaL brought the UM community together. The project’s goal was to revive Varsity Lake. It involved research fixing and re-introducing life to the lake. This holistic approach included rechanneling polluted drainage dredging the lake and installing rip rap to reduce runoff. A mini-wetland acted as a natural filter.

Today cute ducks and geese grace the lake’s surface. Numerous local fish species thrive there. Varsity Lake Park is now a hub for limnology research. It offers incredible potential for freshwater ecology and biology studies.

Kayaking flying fox tree walks and birdwatching are just some of the activities available. Water Warriors a UM environmental project protects and conserves Varsity Lake. They engage the community in citizen science monitoring and gotong-royong efforts. They document the area’s flora and fauna particularly the freshwater habitat.

Varsity Lake Park is more than a place it is a living testament to community spirit and environmental stewardship. It’s a place where history beauty and research come together. It is a place where memories are made. A place you won’t soon forget.
