Once upon a time, Hinksey was not two villages but a single, marshy island. Can you imagine it? Now, let’s dive into the story of Hinksey. This place holds layers of history beneath its modern surface.

Hinksey’s story begins in Old English times. The name “Hinksey” comes from “Hengestesige.” It likely meant “stallion island”. It could also mean “island of a man named Hengest.” These “island” names were common for higher ground in marshy areas. They were given by the first English farmers. They were tackling the area.

The villages of Hinksey weren’t mentioned separately until 1316. Fast forward to the 17th century. The Carfax Conduit was completed in 1617. This brought water from Hinksey Hill to Oxford’s center.

Let’s leap to the early 20th century. Hinksey Halt railway station served New Hinksey from 1908 to 1915. Later, in 1934, Hinksey Park was created in New Hinksey.

Now, Hinksey is split into two villages. There is North Hinksey and South Hinksey. North Hinksey lies west of Oxford. South Hinksey is southwest. Hinksey Stream flows past the west of Oxford. It is a branch of the River Thames.

Hinksey Hill Farm sits on Hinksey Hill near South Hinksey. New Hinksey is a suburb south of the town center. It includes the Hinksey Park ward. Hinksey Park is an 11-acre park. It features an open-air swimming pool.

Hinksey has also inspired artists and writers. William Turner painted Oxford from above Hinksey. John Ruskin admired the area’s rustic charm. He organized students to improve the road. This would link North and South Hinksey. Matthew Arnold mentioned Hinksey in his poems. These poems are “Thyrsis” and “The Scholar Gipsy”.

Even today, Hinksey continues to evolve. A coffee van, the Trading Post Mobile Cafe, applied for a permanent spot in Hinksey Park. They want to build community. They also want to provide gourmet coffee.

From its origins as a marshy “stallion island” to its modern-day villages and park, Hinksey has transformed. It has inspired artists and writers. It has provided essential resources to Oxford. The story of Hinksey is still unfolding.
