Once, this spot was fen and farmland. Then, it became allotments for a while. Now, Bramblefields Local Nature Reserve stands as a testament to nature’s resilience.
Bramblefields Local Nature Reserve covers about 2 hectares. That is approximately 5 acres. It is home to diverse habitats. You will discover grassland, scrub, and wetland. Two small ponds add to the charm. This reserve is perfect for a peaceful walk. It is a quiet place for family visits. Wildlife trails await.
We maintain these varied habitats for local wildlife. We carefully coppice trees. We leave grass to grow long. Each year, we rotate the areas where we crop bramble. This ensures the growth of new blackberries.
Many bird species thrive here at Bramblefields Local Nature Reserve. These include bullfinches, song thrushes, sparrows, and starlings. Sadly, their populations have declined in recent years. In spring, blackcaps and chiffchaffs arrive. They feed on insects living on the bramble and hawthorn. Autumn brings fieldfares and redwings. They feast on the bushes’ berries.
Bramblefields Local Nature Reserve teems with mammals. Foxes, muntjac deer, and hedgehogs live here or visit often. Common lizards are frequently seen too. The ponds’ changing water levels support amphibians and insects. Newts and frogs live and breed here along with dragonflies. We carefully manage the pond. We maintain open water areas to benefit these species.
We’ve even installed a mound of recycled ceramics. This surprising haven attracts solitary bees and bumblebees. It is a trial. We are closely monitoring its success.
You can easily access Bramblefields Local Nature Reserve. Enter from Discovery Way, Laxton Way, Long Reach Road, Pippin Drive, or Ribston Way. There is some on-street parking nearby. However, we encourage you to walk, bike, or take the bus. The reserve offers flat terrain and good access throughout.
