Ever wondered about the heart of British cardiac care? Then you are standing before Royal Papworth Hospital a true pioneer in heart and lung medicine.
Royal Papworth Hospital isn’t just a hospital. It’s a legacy. It began life in 1918 as a sanatorium for tuberculosis patients. Many were First World War veterans. Elsbeth Dimsdale spearheaded this initiative initially known as the Cambridgeshire Tuberculosis Colony. Dr Pendrill Varrier-Jones led the institution.
But Royal Papworth’s story doesn’t end with tuberculosis. In the 1950s it expanded into thoracic surgery that is surgery of the chest and lungs. This eventually led to cardiac surgery. In 1958 Ben Milstein performed the first open-heart surgery right here.
Then came a medical milestone. In August 1979 Terence English performed the UK’s first successful heart transplant. Keith Castle the recipient lived for over five years. This was a monumental achievement and a turning point for the hospital. The hospital continued its groundbreaking work. In 1986 it performed the world’s first heart-lung and liver transplant.
Further innovations followed. In 1994 Arthur Cornhill received the world’s first permanent battery-operated heart. Royal Papworth’s reputation grew. It became a world-leading cardiothoracic centre. It consistently conducts the most heart transplants in the UK with some of the best survival rates.
The hospital’s journey isn’t without challenges. In 2007 it temporarily suspended heart transplants following an investigation into mortality rates. However it was soon given the all-clear.
Today the Royal Papworth Hospital stands as a testament to medical innovation. Its state-of-the-art facilities reflect this commitment to excellence. The Queen officially opened the new hospital on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus in July 2019. It provides a wide array of services including sleep disorders care lung cancer treatment and a robust intensive care unit. Royal Papworth truly deserves its royal title a symbol of its continued dedication to saving lives and pushing the boundaries of cardiac and respiratory care.
