In 1987, West Hills carved its own identity from Canoga Park. This vibrant neighborhood in the western San Fernando Valley boasts a rich tapestry of history, nature, and community spirit. West Hills is bordered by the Santa Monica Mountains to the west, offering breathtaking views. It’s nestled against Chatsworth to the north, Canoga Park to the east, and Woodland Hills to the south. Originally part of Owensmouth, later renamed Canoga Park, West Hills residents sought a distinct identity. They wanted to differentiate themselves from Canoga Park’s industrial areas and create a stronger community focus. This led to a petition drive in 1987, spearheaded by Joel Schiffman. Despite opposition, the movement gained momentum, eventually encompassing a significant portion of what was once Canoga Park. This included the Fallbrook Mall and Platt Village shopping centers. The transition wasn’t without controversy, with debates about boundaries and community identity. West Hills is a place where history whispers through the leaves of ancient trees. Long before the Spanish missions, the Tongva-Fernandeño and Chumash-Venturaño tribes called this land home. The village of Hu’wam, located near present-day Bell Canyon Park, served as a vital trading post. The nearby Cave of Munits holds the legend of a Chumash shaman, adding a touch of mystique to the area. The area became part of Mission San Fernando Rey de España and later Rancho El Escorpiόn. In 1912, George Platt purchased the rancho and transformed it into a dairy farm. This rich history is still palpable in West Hills today. From the Orcutt Ranch Horticulture Center with its adobe residence and citrus orchards, to the historic Shadow Ranch Park, the past comes alive. Nature lovers will find solace in West Hills’ numerous parks and open spaces. El Escorpiόn Park, with its panoramic views from El Escorpiόn Peak, is a must-visit. Bell Canyon Park offers trails along the babbling Bell Creek. The Upper Las Virgenes Canyon Open Space Preserve connects to a vast network of trails in the Santa Monica Mountains. West Hills offers a variety of educational opportunities. Public schools, including eight elementary schools, are operated by the Los Angeles Unified School District. Private schools like de Toledo High School and Chaminade College Preparatory provide alternative choices. West Hills residents take pride in their community, as evidenced by the active West Hills Neighborhood Council. This council serves as a forum for residents to engage in local issues and foster a strong sense of belonging.
