Is Abbiategrasso just a name on a map? No. Abbiategrasso is a town steeped in history. It sits in the Metropolitan City of Milan. We are standing in Abbiategrasso. Let’s uncover its story.
Abbiategrasso is in Lombardy. This town boasts a population of about 30,000. It is part of the greater Milan area.
The town lies entirely within the Lombard Park of the Ticino Valley. It’s on the “line of the fountains”. This line divides the upper and lower Po Valley.
People have lived in the Abbiategrasso area since the Bronze Age. The area grew during Roman times. A battle between Hannibal and the Romans occurred nearby. The Via Gallica, a vital Roman road, crossed its lands. Later, Celts, Lombards and Huns invaded and raided here.
By 1034, the Archbishop of Milan possessed Abbiategrasso. He ordered a defensive outpost built. Various feudal lords then ruled the area.
The village grew around the church of San Pietro. It also expanded south toward a small castle. This castle stood near the present-day church of Santa Maria Vecchia. This southern area became the main center. The older village maintained some autonomy.
The Milan-Mortara railway line opened in 1870. This caused the decline of river transport on the Navigli canals. Local traders self-taxed to ensure the railway passed through Abbiategrasso. The railway station was built thanks to their contribution. Abbiategrasso officially became a city on March 31, 1932.
Abbiategrasso boasts several points of interest. The Castello Visconteo is a must-see. Construction began in 1381. It stands on the site of a former building. The archbishops of Milan once owned this earlier structure. The castle held strategic importance. It sat between the Naviglio Grande canal and the Milan-Vigevano road.
The castle served as a summer residence for duchesses. It played a defensive role for the Duchy of Milan until 1635. Later, the Governor of Milan began dismantling it. He wanted to prevent it from falling into French hands. The castle underwent significant changes in the 15th, 17th and 19th centuries. It became municipal property. It served as a school and later as a seat for town associations. A 1995 restoration recovered the architectural structure. It also enhanced the various decorative elements.
Frescoes commissioned by the Visconti family mark the building’s transition. It went from a military outpost to a stately home. Today, the Castello Visconteo houses the Romeo Brambilla civic library. It also hosts meetings, exhibitions, and cultural events.
The Fiera di Abbiategrasso is another highlight. The first fair took place in the late 15th century. It began as an agricultural fair. Today, it is one of the oldest regional agricultural fairs in the province of Milan.
The Convento dell’Annunciata is another important site. Construction began in 1469. It finished in 1472. The church was consecrated in 1477. In 1810, the convent was suppressed. The following year, it became a hospital. Later, it was divided and sold to private individuals. It became a complex of small social housing units. The Municipal Administration acquired the building. Restoration was completed in 2007. The complex now hosts cultural events. These include conferences, courses, exhibitions and concerts.
Abbiategrasso is more than just a stop on a map. It is a city of history. It is a city of culture. It is a city waiting to be explored. Take a moment to appreciate the rich heritage around us.
