You see him there, on the median, in a little bit of grass, a bronze boy half-submerged, gazing up at the sky. This is The Dreamer, by artist David Phelps, and he has been a fixture in The Woodlands for decades.

The Dreamer stands tall, 17 feet long and 4 feet high, a striking testament to the enduring power of art. He seems to be napping, his head resting on one hand. He is barefoot, his toes curled up on the ground.

The Woodlands Development Company commissioned the sculpture, and it was installed in 1989, at a critical moment in the city’s history. He marked the western boundary of The Woodlands, a symbol of the growing community. But The Dreamer isn’t just a boundary marker.

His story is deeply personal. The artist, David Phelps, was inspired by a vision he had in the middle of the night. The Dream was a powerful image, representing the vulnerability of an artist, the beauty of childhood dreams, and the simple pleasure of a nap in the quiet woods.

Phelps uses a ‘lost wax’ technique, a centuries-old art form that calls for meticulous detail. The resulting sculpture is truly lifelike. It’s not just a bronze statue; it’s a tangible representation of a dream. He has brothers, too, two identical sculptures displayed in Philadelphia and Santa Fe, and an even larger version in Oklahoma. But this is The Dreamer of The Woodlands.

You can see a bronze boy, dreaming in a half-submerging form. You might find that The Dreamer stirs an unknown feeling in you, making you think of that quiet, private world within, that place where we all go to dream.
