In 1926, the RRI requested a temporary laboratory building from the government. This building was on Damansara Road in Selangor. The government granted the request and leased the building for five years. As the institute grew, it needed a larger and more permanent location. In 1936, the RRI decided to relocate to a new building on Ampang Road. The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sulaiman, officiated the new building in April 1936. By the 1970s, European tire manufacturers like Dunlop and Michelin embraced Malaysian block rubber.
Another significant contribution of the RRI was in rubber glove production. When the HIV/AIDS epidemic increased the demand for medical gloves, the RRI stepped up its research. It collaborated with the Tun Abdul Razak Research Centre or TARRC. Together, they developed technologies for producing thin, soft, and cheap gloves. These innovations helped Malaysia become a leading producer of rubber gloves.
