“No exceptions” is more than just a motto here at Saint Marks Episcopal Church. It is a way of life. Founded in 1913, Saint Marks began its journey in what was then called East San Diego. Today, we know it as City Heights. The church started in a middle-class, blue-collar neighborhood. Over time, single-family homes gave way to apartment buildings. The area became more densely populated and diverse.

After the original Saint Marks building was torn down in the early 1990s, the church moved just two blocks north. Here, Saint Marks created a space to serve the needs of City Heights. Saint Marks strives to be a diverse-faith community. It emphasizes social justice and a contemporary style of worship. All are welcome here. No exceptions.

Saint Marks believes the kingdom of God is made visible. This happens through the proclamation of the Gospel and loving acts of service. The church is an accessible congregation. It believes everyone is gifted by God. Through baptism, all are called to share God’s grace and mercy. Saint Marks embraces people of all ages and abilities. It welcomes those of all sexual orientations and diverse backgrounds. All gather here for worship, service, and learning.

Saint Marks is deeply involved in serving City Heights. This urban community faces many challenges. Unemployment is high. There are also high rates of childhood obesity, asthma, and violence. Saint Marks offers services and hope to all. The church regularly feeds families through a neighborhood food cupboard. It recruits tutors for the ERN Refugee Network. Saint Marks also distributes fresh fruits and vegetables to many families. It operates a winter shelter too.

The church is committed to racial healing, reconciliation, and justice. Saint Marks hosts Sacred Ground dialogue circles. These small groups explore America’s history of race and racism. They weave in personal stories and explore economic and political identities. The series uses films and readings to focus on Indigenous, Black, Latino, and Asian/Pacific American histories. Participants peel away layers to understand the challenges of today. These discussions are grounded in faith, hope, and love.

Saint Marks has made a commitment to be an accessible congregation. The church has Cathedral Chairs instead of pews. This allows wheelchairs and scooters to be easily accommodated. The floors are flat and the restrooms are ADA compliant. Saint Marks is fortunate to have members who are part of the disabled community. They enrich the church’s common life and worship. Saint Marks Episcopal Church is more than just a building. It is a community. A family. It is a beacon of hope in City Heights.
