Remembered for excellence The Perse Prep School stands before us. What began as a vision centuries ago continues to flourish here. Dr. Stephen Perse founded The Perse School in 1615. He envisioned a place where talented boys from all backgrounds could thrive. His goal was to offer a route out of poverty through education.
Initially named a “free grammar school”, The Perse aimed to bridge the gap between town and gown. This Cambridge institution welcomed 100 free scholars. Many of these students progressed to study at Caius College.
For a time The Perse faced challenges. During the 18th century neglect led to a decline. However local protests and a court case in 1837 restored the school. It was returned to its proper footing and began to flourish once more.
The Perse Prep as we see it today evolved over time. In 1910, the Prep acquired its own site on Bateman Street. Later in 1954, it moved to its current location on Trumpington Road.
Today The Perse Prep is known for its strong academics. ISI Inspectors consider the academic achievement of pupils to be ‘Exceptional’. The school uses the National Curriculum with some additions and variations. They have codified learning habits as the Perse Learning Philosophy.
Sport plays a key role at The Perse Prep. Over 15 sports are offered throughout the year. The school has competitive teams in major sports from Year 3. They have achieved national success in athletics, football, hockey, orienteering, and table tennis.
The Arts also thrive at The Perse Prep. Art, music, and drama are taught to all pupils. Most pupils take extra-curricular instrument lessons from Year 3. The school boasts many choirs, orchestras and instrument ensembles.
The Perse Prep is more than just academics and extracurriculars. It is a community that values its students. It provides wraparound care from early morning to late afternoon. A school bus service makes transportation easier.
The Perse is committed to its core values. These values include endeavor, intellectual curiosity, breadth and balance. The school values each other and the environment. All of these things help create well-rounded students.
The Perse fosters a global outlook. The school has international campuses in China and Singapore. These campuses offer opportunities for exchange trips. Before Covid there were trips and exchanges to other countries.
The Perse Prep prepares students for future success. Most pupils go on to The Perse Upper School. The school’s curriculum enriches A Level studies with elements of the IB program.
As we stand here we recognize The Perse Prep’s enduring legacy. Founded on the principles of education for all The Perse continues to shape young minds. It equips them to excel in an ever-changing world.
