Opened on August 12 1970 Devonshire Mall wasn’t always the retail giant we see today. Initially it boasted a mere 70 stores a far cry from the over 200 that now fill its over 1 million square feet. Imagine that! Devonshire Mall then a fledgling shopping center quickly established itself as a Windsor landmark. It quickly became the largest mall between Detroit and London Ontario.

Its location southeast of the E C Row Expressway and Howard Avenue interchange was strategic. This prime location ensured easy access for shoppers from Windsor and beyond. The Devonshire Mall’s growth wasn’t without challenges. A tornado in 1973 caused minor damage but the mall was swiftly repaired. This resilience is a testament to its enduring appeal.

Devonshire Mall underwent five major expansions. These expansions reflected the evolving tastes of consumers and the ever-expanding retail landscape. The additions brought new stores restaurants and entertainment options. It even played an unexpected role housing the Art Gallery of Windsor temporarily from 1993 to 2001. This unconventional location for an art gallery showcased the mall’s adaptability.

Today Devonshire Mall remains a bustling hub. It offers a diverse mix of brand name stores a large food court and even a cinema. Anchors like The Bay Sears and Zellers once dominated the landscape. However retail changes are constant. The closure of some anchors like Sears and Target reflects the shifts in the retail industry. Yet the mall persists adapting and evolving to meet the demands of modern shoppers.

Devonshire Mall has weathered storms both literal and figurative. Its longevity and continuous growth are a reflection of its place in the heart of Windsor. It’s more than just a shopping center. It’s a testament to community resilience and a reflection of the city’s own evolving story. Devonshire Mall is a Windsor icon and a vital part of the city’s identity.
