Hidden within Dortmund’s largest green space, the Hauptfriedhof, rests the Trauerhalle. This solemn building, completed in 1924, serves as the heart of the cemetery. The Trauerhalle’s design, a collaborative effort by architect Josef Wentzler, city building officer Hans Strobel, and Heinrich Strunck, reflects the architectural trends of the 1920s. Its imposing structure dominates the cemetery’s landscape. The Trauerhalle has witnessed countless moments of grief and remembrance. Over the years, the original color scheme of the interior faded. Restoration efforts couldn’t definitively determine the initial hues. The recent renovation, therefore, involved a reimagining of the color scheme based on existing evidence. The ceiling, once adorned with a historical painting, was also lost to time. A competition was held to create a new artistic piece for the ceiling, breathing fresh life into the Trauerhalle. The lighting within the Trauerhalle also underwent a transformation. Modern LED technology now illuminates the space. But the design of the visible lights remains faithful to the 1920s aesthetic. Many lights are discreetly placed. This allows the architectural details to take center stage, enhancing the contemplative atmosphere. The Trauerhalle at Hauptfriedhof stands as a testament to both history and remembrance in Dortmund.
