Founded in 1873 as Uchidagawa Elementary School, this institution has witnessed Otsu’s transformation over centuries. Initially established during the Meiji era, the school has served the community for 150 years. Its name changed several times, reflecting the evolving identity of Otsu. In 1885 it became Otsu School, then Otsu Island Normal Higher Elementary School in 1892. During World War II, it was renamed Otsu City Chuo National School in 1941. Finally, in 1947, it received its current name, Otsu Shiritsu Chuo Elementary School. The school has continually adapted to meet the needs of its students. In 1969, the school introduced co-educational classrooms. A gymnasium was completed in 1974, followed by a preschool in 1975. Renovations and expansions continued throughout the years, including a pool renovation in 1989, gymnasium upgrades in 2010, and the completion of new classrooms in 2022. The school also established special support classes in 2011. The school celebrated its 150th anniversary on February 8, 2023.
