Built in the Victorian era by Andrea Stombuco, a renowned Florentine architect, Holy Cross opened its doors in 1886. The beautiful church also reflects the strong Irish heritage of the city. The foundation stone was laid by Bishop Dunne in 1885, and the first resident priest was appointed in 1892, coinciding with the establishment of the Wooloowin parish. The church was also intimately connected with the Sisters of Mercy, who played a vital role in the area’s social life. The original building was expanded in 1911, and a new modern church was built alongside in 1968. The original Holy Cross Church is now used as a hall, but it still retains its historic charm.
