Wow Look at the Finback sculpture. It’s amazing isn’t it?
This bronze resin and steel masterpiece is more than just a pretty face. It’s a tribute to Walter “Snowy” Farr. Snowy was a Cambridge legend. He raised thousands for charity in the market square. Dressed in a red tunic and black boots he’d perform with a menagerie of animals. Cats dogs mice even pigeons.
Can you imagine the scene? A whirlwind of furry and feathered friends all while Snowy collected money. He was quite the character. A true eccentric. His fundraising efforts were legendary. He earned an MBE for his charitable work.
After Snowy passed away in 2007 the city decided to honor him. They commissioned a sculpture to capture his spirit. Gary Webb the artist didn’t want a stuffy formal statue. He wanted something fun. Something that reflected Snowy’s playful nature.
The result is the Finback. It’s abstract. It doesn’t literally depict Snowy. Instead it evokes his energy his vibrancy. The sculpture’s curves and shapes hint at the movement of Snowy’s animal companions. It’s playful and engaging just like Snowy himself.
