Overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, stands the Torre Amari. Or as it was once known, the Dammuso di Gallo. This unassuming tower holds within its stones a story of centuries of vigilance against pirate incursions. Imagine Palermo in the 15th century, a bustling port city under constant threat from North African corsairs. These pirates, sailing from bases like Algiers, Tunis, and Gerba, terrorized the Sicilian coast. They plundered towns, seizing goods and people. The Torre Amari played a vital role in Palermo’s defense system. It served as a watchtower, part of a network of lookouts along the coast. Two guards were stationed here. They scanned the horizon, watching for the telltale sails of approaching pirate ships. At the first sign of danger, they would send signals, smoke by day and fire by night, alerting the city and surrounding countryside. This allowed the population to evacuate and prepare defenses. The Dammuso di Gallo, later known as Torre Amari when the surrounding land became property of Count Amari in 1721, is a modest structure. It measures approximately 4.86 by 4.58 meters. It has a single entrance facing southwest. The walls, built from local stone and mortar, vary in thickness from 0.6 to 0.8 meters. Inside, there was a vaulted roof and a cistern carved into the rock to collect rainwater. The tower’s location, on a plateau sheltered by a curtain of rocks, offered protection from the north wind. It also provided a degree of concealment from approaching enemy ships. Torre Amari wasn’t alone in its vigil. Nearby, on the most eastern point of Monte Gallo, stood the Torre Mazzone. This tower, though more difficult to reach, offered a strategic vantage point overlooking the entire Palermo area. Together, these towers formed a crucial line of defense. They silently stood guard against the threat from the sea, protecting the city and its people for over three centuries.
