Crumbling brick whispers tales of Detroit’s past. Before you stands Engine House #11. This isn’t just any fire station. It’s the oldest surviving firehouse in the entire city. Built in 1883 by Gascione & Sons with designs from William Scott & Company its Queen Anne style is a testament to a bygone era.

Engine Company No 11 began as the “Steam Fire Engine Company #11” in 1884. Imagine the clang of the bell the thunder of hooves as horse-drawn engines raced to emergencies. A Silsby Steam engine and hose reel cart were their first tools. They transitioned to motorized vehicles in 1916 using a Seagrave gasoline engine. A significant upgrade for its time.

Notice the hose-drying tower on the building’s east side. It’s shorter than originally designed. During World War II an air raid siren was installed on top. This small alteration reflects the city’s role during a global conflict. In 1972 Engine Company No 11 moved to newer facilities. Engine House #11 then served as an Emergency Medical Unit before becoming a fire department museum.

Step inside and picture the firefighters’ lives. The ground floor housed the apparatus room kitchen and dining area. The second floor provided sleeping quarters showers and locker rooms. There were even private rooms for the Captain and Lieutenant. A former hayloft now a recreation room adds a touch of history to the building’s interior.

Engine House #11 stands as a reminder of Detroit’s firefighting heritage. Its survival despite the city’s changes is a feat in itself. It’s a symbol of resilience a testament to the dedicated men and women who served Detroit. The building stands proudly. A vital part of the city’s rich history. It’s a powerful visual. A lasting reminder of the past.
